Guns and drugs dominate indictments

18 total charged in July

WHITLEY CITY —  A Pine Knot man who led authorities on a 45-minute chase after holding his family hostage was indicted last week in four separate cases.

The McCreary County Grand Jury charged William Steve Gibson, 49, with first-degree burglary, first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree fleeing or evading police in connection to a May 21 hostage investigation.

When the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department responded to the McCreary Apartments at approximately noon, Gibson ran out of the back door of his estranged wife’s apartment — leading officers in a car chase to the Appletree Shooting Range where he ditched his vehicle.

Gibson continued on foot until he was captured in the creekbed below McCreary Central High School. Officers recovered a Winchester 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun from the apartment.

According to a separate indictment charging him with first-degree burglary and Theft By Unlawful Taking, Gibson took the gun the day before from Tim Wilson’s residence.

In another indictment, the grand jury charged Gibson with first-degree Promoting Contraband for acquiring three morphine and one oxycodone pills while in the custody of the McCreary County Detention Center on June 19.

A fourth indictment charged Gibson with six counts of Theft By Failure to Make Required Disposition of Property Over $500 but Less than $10,000. Between September 2011 and March 2012, Gibson accepted $8,000 from Bill Parton to fix up a 1966 Ford Galaxy but failed to do so.

While no one was physically harmed in the Gibson incident, Norman D. Waters was shot by Crystal Redden after he forced himself into her Osborne Creek residence armed with a Taurus PT 140 Pro 40 caliber handgun on June 22.

Redden was not charged but the incident led to a five-count indictment against Waters. The 71-year-old Pine Knot man was charged with first-degree burglary as well as four counts of second-degree assault for striking with his gun Redden, Tonya Cox, Courtney Phillips and Brian Spradlin.

The grand jury also charged Billy J. Coffey, 58, of Whitley City with first-degree wanton endangerment in connection to a June 28 incident in which he fired several shots into a Brad Circle residence occupied by a juvenile.

An investigation led by the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force resulted in drug trafficking indictments against 10 individuals this month:
