Russell Springs man on beer quest leads officers on high speed chase

STRUNK —  A Russell County man is cooling his heels in jail after his thirst for a cold one led to a high-speed chase through the heart of McCreary County Thursday night.

Lance R. Miller, 37, of Russell Springs was arrested just before 11 p.m. Thursday night and charged with Speeding 26 MPH or More over Limit, Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs (first offense), Operating on a Suspended License, Reckless Driving, second-degree Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest, second-degree Wanton Endangerment of a Police Officer and No Registration.

Miller’s story begins at approximately 9:45 p.m. Thursday night. McCreary County deputies Tom Smith and Ethan Jones were northbound on US 27 when they were dispatched to intercept a southbound SUV which had been reported as “all over the road.”

According to Deputy Smith, the officers encountered the vehicle near Randy’s Auto Parts just below Parkers Lake. Dep. Smith turned his cruiser around in order to stop the 2003 Nissan Xterra. The vehicle did pull over but took off again just as Dep. Smith opened his door to get out.

“It was a very scare chase,” Dep. Smith said. “Luckily there was not much traffic and no one was hurt.”

The deputy said that they reached speeds of up to 120 mph and never got below 100.

“He never braked,” Dep. Smith said of Miller. “He had no regard for safety at all. The only thing on our minds was to get him stopped before he killed somebody.”

As other officers joined the chase, they unsuccessfully attempted to get in front of the Nissan. Four Scott County units were waiting at the state line with spike strips to stop the vehicle.

But Miller’s luck ran out around the Mt. Pleasant Road intersection, where the Xterra’s engine blew up. The suspect then tried to fight his way out but was subdued with a taser.

Assisting at the scene were Kentucky State Police Sgt. Bill Elliot and Trp. Tony Dingess, constables Freddie Clark and Donald Daugherty, and Sheriff Gus Skinner. Sheriff Skinner said he was called because it appeared that Miller had thrown something from his vehicle but nothing was recovered in the subsequent K-9 search.

When asked why Miller might have fled the traffic stop, Dep. Smith indicated that the suspect already has a lengthy record. Also, Miller apparently told authorities that he was headed to Scott County to buy beer.

“He must not have known Pulaski is now selling,” the deputy said.

Miller remained lodged at press time in the Laurel County Correctional Center under a $5,000 bond. Dep. Smith has presented his case to the McCreary County Grand Jury.
