STEARNS —
When Mehgann Marshall — who prefers to be called Mehg — moved to McCreary County last November, she could hardly imagine that she would be running her own pottery shop just five months later.
The Deland, FL, native first fell in love with pottery as a high school freshman. Marshall was interested in jewelry and leatherwork until one day her teacher, who turned out to be a master potter, brought out his pottery wheel for a demonstration.
“I never liked drawing,” Marshall remembers. “I like to jump in and do the work. With clay, I’m part of it…it’s part of me. That’s why I’ve stuck with it all these years.”
After high school, Marshall continued her studies with an extensive eight-week course at the prestigious Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina as well as the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg. Until now, Marshall’s work has mainly been displayed through fine arts shows and festivals.
But Marshall had always wanted to start her own shop and moving to McCreary County turned out to be the perfect opportunity.
Marshall was displaying her wares through establishments like Courthouse Corner Coffees & Cafe and the McCreary County Museum when she found a place of her own in Stearns at 38 Henderson Street beside the Big South Fork Scenic Railway Depot.
“It’s great for the kind of art I do,” Marshall said. “I have the retail space up front and my studio in back.”
Though she takes custom orders, most of Marshall’s pieces — including lamps, butterbells, chicken pans and glassware — are created with everyday use in mind. Her cookware is dishwasher, microwave and oven-safe.
“It’s art but you can cook with it,” Marshall said, adding that she was inspired by her grandmother’s table settings. “You can take it right from the oven to the table. It’s modern and classy.”
Marshall produces her own glazes as well. Though many potters specialize in one component of the trade, she says she enjoys the challenge of learning multiple disciplines.
As with her art, the shop is a work in progress. Marshall has offered display space to eight vendors and is currently exploring the possibility of offering one-on-one classes for those interested in pottery.
