Last week McCreary County bid farewell to one of its most renowned citizens.
Robert Ernest Stephens, 91, passed away last Tuesday, May 15, at his home following a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Friday, with burial following in the Stephens Family Cemetery.
Stephens was born February 9, 1921 in Pine Knot, to the late Arthur and Jewell (Reed) Stephens. He was a member of the Whitley City First Baptist Church, the Soil Conservation, and the Orie S. Ware #874 Masonic Lodge.
Stephens served a total of 30 years with the Marine Corps — 20 years on active duty and 10 with the reserve. He had joined the Marines in 1940 when he was financially unable continue his studies at Georgetown College. When the United States entered World War II, Stephens wound up in the Pacific Theater — stationed at Guadalcanal.
Following his military service, Stephens settled in Louisville where he worked for Devoe Paint — a job which allowed him to travel nationwide. He returned to McCreary County in 1964 where he taught with McCreary County Schools.
In his retirement, Stephens earned a reputation as a historian. He wrote several books, including a catalog of local cemeteries. His concern for high cancer rates locally also led him to environmental advocacy with his late wife Beatrice.
