WHITLEY CITY —
Authorities continue to investigate a burglary which occurred early Saturday morning at the Rite Aid pharmacy in Whitley City.
According to McCreary County Sheriff’s Detective David Sampson, the burglary occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. Det. Sampson was dispatched to check the store’s alarm, and Fish and Wildlife Officer Stuart Bryant also responded to the scene.
It appeared that the burglar(s) accessed the store through the back, where officers found bolts had been removed. The electricity had been cut and wiring stripped as well.
The pharmacy window had been broken and the safe had been broken into.
Apparently the job was interrupted, Sampson said, as “thousands of pills” were left behind.
Constable Donald Daugherty and Dep. Bob West also assisted at the scene.
While outside around the back of the store, Det. Sampson heard a noise in the woods. Officers then attempted to flush out the suspects, and Constable Daugherty located one man hiding behind a piece of machinery between Rite Aid and Forcht Bank. The suspect was dressed in black and carried vice grips as well as a cell phone.
The man, identified as 38-year-old David L. Debord Jr. of Eubank, was arrested and charged with 3rd-degree burglary, theft of a controlled substance and first-degree criminal mischief. Det. Sampson told the Record that while Debord acknowledged acting as a lookout and indicated the involvement of one other individual, he did not identify any additional suspects.
However, with evidence found inside the store paired with video from surrounding businesses, Det. Sampson said he is confident at least one additional arrest will be forthcoming.
At press time, the detective was awaiting confirmation from Rite-Aid that all controlled substances had been recovered.
Debord remains lodged in the McCreary County Detention Center.
