Centennial Celebration comes to a close

Time capsule, founders’ tribute to be unveiled

WHITLEY CITY —  The year-long celebration in honor of McCreary County’s centennial comes to a close next Tuesday, March 12 — the county’s 101st birthday — with two special events.

Starting at 10 a.m. at the McCreary County Courthouse, officials with the McCreary County Centennial Committee, Historical and Genealogical Society as well as your Public Library will gather on the courthouse steps for the placement of a time capsule.

The festivities then move to Pine Knot Intermediate where at 2 p.m., the McCreary County Historical and Genealogical Society will unveil its contribution to the county’s centennial celebration, a memorial to the Founding Fathers of McCreary County. The memorial features Governor James B. McCreary, who was serving when the county was formed; Representative William B. Creekmore, the Pine Knot businessman who spearheaded the effort to carve a new county from portions of Wayne, Pulaski and Whitley counties; Martin B. Campbell, another instrumental Pine Knot businessman; and John Crittenden Bird, who was Whitley County Attorney at the time.

The public is invited to attend both events.
