Sawmill owner passes away

Hatfield was 63

PINE KNOT —  A local businessman passed away last week.

    Kenneth “Earl” Hatfield, 63, died Monday, December 31. He was the owner of McCreary County Hardwoods Inc. in Pine Knot.

    A native of Wayne County, Hatfield was born June 21, 1949, to the late George Frank and Ona Earl (Parmley) Hatfield. He was united in marriage to Vannie Parmley, with whom he had three children.

    Hatfield founded McCreary Hardwoods in 1988. Six years ago, he expanded his sawmill business — opening Wayne Hardwoods Inc. in Monticello.

    He is survived by his wife, son David Hatfield, daughters Rhonda Hatfield-Jeffers and Tammy Hatfield, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Theo Hatfield along with a host of family and friends who mourn his passing.

    Funeral services were held Saturday at the Parmley’s Grove Baptist Church, of which he was a member, in Wayne County. Hatfield was then laid to rest in the church cemetery.

  • County budget passes 1st reading

    WHITLEY CITY  — Topping the agenda for the May meeting of McCreary County Fiscal Court last Tuesday was the first reading of the 2013-14 county budget.
        At $7.65 million, this budget is down more than $650,000 from last year’s $8.3 million budget.
