Pedestrian killed on US 27

Canada was 23

WHITLEY CITY — UPDATE: Mrs. Canada's visitation will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with burial following in Grave Hill Cemetery.

A young woman is dead following a tragic accident on McCreary County’s busiest highway.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:47 p.m. Saturday night on US 27 in Whitley City. Seth Tucker, 18, of Whitley City was driving northbound not far from the Sandhill Road (KY 700) intersection when, police say, a pedestrian walked out in front of his 2004 Toyota Camry.

The woman — 23-year-old Heather L. Canada of Whitley City — was struck by the Camry’s passenger side. She was pronounced dead at the scene by McCreary County Coroner Dan Ridener.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Shaler Jones is leading the investigation into the accident, of which neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected to have been a factor. Trooper Jones was assisted at the scene by the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department, McCreary County EMS and the Whitley City Fire Department.

Canada is only the second pedestrian reported to have been killed on a Kentucky roadway since the first of the year, according to preliminary statistics from the Kentucky State Police.

Funeral arrangements, incomplete at press time, will be handled by the Southern Oaks Funeral Home in Somerset.
