PINE KNOT — Two years of anticipation are finally coming to an end with the announcement that new KY 92 will open to traffic this Wednesday (tomorrow).
[UPDATE: The road actually opened on Tuesday, June 26.]
This project constitutes the second phase of the highway realignment. The first section, which ends at I-75 in Whitley County, opened in the fall of 2009. That December, a $13,771,643 contract was awarded to Hi-View LLC for the construction of Phase 2 from US 27 to KY 592 in McCreary County. Work began in February 2010.
As part of the latest Kentucky road plan, lawmakers have allocated $8.7 million for the third and final segment to connect Davis Hill in McCreary County to Old Jellico Creek in Whitley County. Over the next two years, $1 million will be spent on the design of that section while the balance will go toward right-of-way purchases and utility relocation.
The completion of KY 92 has long been a priority for county officials as it will slash the travel time to I-75 as well as improve safety.
“I see this as a positive thing for McCreary County,” Judge-Executive Doug Stephens said. “I look forward to the highway opening this week.”
Weather permitting, vehicles will travel the new highway on Wednesday. However Amber Hale, Public Information Officer with Kentucky Department of Highways’ District 8 office, advised that drivers should allow extra time in reaching their destination as crews are expected to work through Friday on connecting KY 92 to KY 592 at Davis Hill.
