WHITLEY CITY —
A McCreary County Grand Jury returned indictments against 13 individuals last week, several of which involve jail-related crimes.
Topping the list is Rodney Cullen McDowell, 23, of Whitley City. McDowell is charged with second-degree Escape and second-degree Persistent Felony Offender after walking away from the McCreary County Detention Center on January 20.
McDowell had been part of a work-release crew assigned to the McCreary County Recycling Center in Stearns but was returned to the jail early that day after he apparently damaged a radio at the site. He was reported as an escapee shortly thereafter.
Some seven hours later, McDowell was taken into custody by Kentucky State Trooper Craig Reed.
McDowell has been a state inmate since last June, when he began serving a three-year sentence for third-degree Burglary.
Several other individuals have been charged with promoting contraband within the local jail.
Bobby Massengale, 82 Lloyd Martin Road, Pine Knot, and Nancy Chala Doran, 24, of 59 Mose Musgrove Road in Pine Knot were jointly indicted for first-degree Promoting Contraband for bringing 10 morphine pills into the McCreary County Detention Center on December 2. Massengale is facing an additional count of first-degree Trafficking in a Controlled Substance while Doran faces an additional count of second-degree PFO.
Luther Murphy, 48, of 19 School House Road in Williamsburg, has been charged with first-degree Promoting Contraband and first-degree PFO. On November 5, Murphy brought Suboxone film into the jail. He has been previously convicted of drug possession (2005) and drug trafficking (2009).
Bobby Joe Kidd, 226 Long Ridge Road, Strunk, was indicted for first-degree Promoting Contraband and second-degree PFO. On December 30, Kidd was found in possession of oxycodone and tobacco at the McCreary County Detention Center. He also had other supplies: toothbrush, Q-tips, shampoo, shower gel and a plastic bag of coffee. Kidd was previously convicted of theft in 2009.
Also indicted in March were:
• Brandon Humphrey, 135 Old Cal Hill Road, Pine Knot, and Mark E. Thomas, Dave Hamlin Road, Pine Knot — two counts of third-degree Burglary, Theft By Unlawful Taking Over $500 and Less than $10,000, Theft by Unlawful Taking Over $10,000, and two counts of third-degree Criminal Mischief. On February 3, the pair broke into buildings owned by McCreary County Hardwood and stole a 2240 John Deere tractor along with various other items. A coke machine and building were damaged during the course of the theft.
• Gregory Gholson, Lower Wolf Creek Road, Stearns — Receiving Stolen Property of $500 or more but less than $10,000 and first-degree PFO. On December 19, Gholson was found with a Taylor DN3 guitar and case belonging to Michael Crawford. He has been convicted twice of burglary in 2006 and 2008.
• Anthony Leon Stephens, 2066 Cal Hill Road, Pine Knot — First-degree Fleeing or Evading Police While Operating a Motor Vehicle, second-offense Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence (DUI), third-degree Assault and Intimidating a Participant in a Legal Process. The charges stem from a February 16 traffic stop conducted by Constable Freddie Clark.
• James Melton Brewster, 67 Old Cal Hill Road, Pine Knot — Third-degree Rape. On July 8, Brewster had intercourse with minor under 16.
• Garrett Phillips and David Phillips, both of 111 Payton Hayes Road in Whitley City, and Larry Tucker, 200 Selvidge Lane, Whitley City — Theft By Unlawful Taking Over $500 But Less than $10,000. On November 21, the trio stole a KFX four-wheeler from Wayne Privett.
