Grand Jury indicts 14

Trio demanding money tops list

WHITLEY CITY —   A trio arrested last month after a robbery spree has been indicted by the McCreary County grand jury, according to the May report filed last Tuesday.

Richard Marion, 40, of Strunk; Samuel L. Large, 31, of Knoxville; and Janie Newman (aka Hall), 38, of Winfield were arrested May 15 in connection to several reported robberies in the Pine Knot and Stearns area.

According to McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Joe Horne, authorities had received reports of subjects walking into various residences at Parkhurst Apartments demanding money. The search escalated with the report of a home invasion off Wilburn Ross Highway. The suspected vehicle, a Buick Rendezvous, was spotted on that road with a man allegedly firing a shot out the window. Officers ultimately detained the occupants of the vehicle, driven by Large, in a Sargent Road Driveway.

Along with the adults were a 14-year-old and a one-year-old. A check with Scott County, TN, authorities revealed that the children had been reported missing by their grandmother, who has custody. Newman had picked them up earlier to take them to Winfield Park but instead crossed the state line with Large in order to meet up with Marion.

The grand jury charged Marion with first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, Theft by Unlawful Taking and Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon (1911 handgun and Lorcin .22 caliber handgun) in connection with one of the incidents.

Newman has been indicted for Criminal Complicity to Burglary First Degree and Criminal Complicity to Robbery First Degree, while Large was indicted for Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon.

In other news, Quinton D. Jones, 27, of Somerset was indicted for Kidnapping, first-degree Unlawful Imprisonment, fourth-degree Assault and second-degree Persistent Felony Offender. On March 21, Jones unlawfully restrained Roxanna Williams and Dylan Waters. He has been previously convicted of Theft by Unlawful Taking Over $300.

Grand jurors also returned indictments against:

    • Joshua Vanover, 20, of Somerset — first-degree Fleeing or Evading Police. On March 31, Vanover failed to stop for Constable Donald Daugherty.

    • Donnie Jason Lair, 32, Wayne County Detention Center — second-degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument and first-degree Persistent Felony Offender. On December 20, Lair cashed a $40 check with Phillip Eller’s forged signature at L&S Grocery. His prior convictions include forgery, auto theft, fleeing police, drug trafficking and escape dating back to 2008.

    • Ronnie G. Hicks, 36, of Parkers Lake — second-degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. On March 15, Hicks cashed a $168 check with Shawn Sumner’s forged signature at Kroger U-Save.

    • Ashley Lyons Cooper, 28 (no address given) — second-degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. On April 15, Cooper used a $123.26 check with Chris Cooper’s forged signature to make a purchase at IGA.

    • Oscar Dwayne “Rocky” Martin, 40, of Pine Knot — Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon and second-degree PFO. On December 10, Martin possessed a Raven Model P-25 handgun. His prior convictions include drug possession and burglary.

    • Oscar Dwayne “Rocky” Martin, 40, of Pine Knot; Roscoe Bryant, 37, and Fred Bryant, 32, both of Pine Knot — Theft by Unlawful Taking Over $500 but Less than $10,000. On May 14, the trio took a fuel tank belonging to Ronald King. Martin and Roscoe Bryant are individually charged with first-degree PFO. Bryant has been previously convicted of receiving stolen property and burglary.

    • Eric D. Boswell, 28, of London — Theft by Deception Over $500 but Less than $10,000. On September 1, Boswell gave Donald Dickman a “false impression as to the price of asphalt paving.”

    • Randolph Scott Boswell, 31, of London — Theft by Deception Over $500 but Less than $10,000 and first-degree PFO. On November 3, Boswell gave Jimmie Greene a “false impression as to the price of asphalt paving.” He has been previously convicted of theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking and bail jumping.

    • Joseph H. Clark, 44 (no address given) — Failure to Comply with Sex Offender Registration and second-degree PFO. Clark was found non-compliant on April 1 after having been required to register for first-degree rape. His previous convictions include Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

Readers are reminded that an indictment is a charge and should not be considered as evidence of an individual’s guilt. Anyone under indictment is presumed innocent until and unless convicted in a court of law.
