WHITLEY CITY —
McCreary County Clerk Eric Haynes has been busy the last few weeks preparing his office for two upcoming elections, and a state website error would have made him even busier.
The candidate listings on the website for the Kentucky Secretary of State incorrectly listed Haynes as a candidate for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor instead of D.L. “Dillard” Wright.
Haynes said he was never a candidate for the position. The error occurred because the state misread Wright’s paperwork, which had included a space for the clerk’s name to which the candidate filed. The website was corrected on Friday.
Wright is one of eight candidates vying for four seats on the nonpartisan conservation district board. The others are Oscar F. Hamilton, Hurstle I. Smith, Herschel Reed, Anthony Trammell, Peg Taylor, Coby Stephens and Bradley Coffey Jr.
Three seats are also on the line for the McCreary County Board of Education with each incumbent facing at least one challenger at press time.
In District 1, incumbent Nelda J. Gilreath will face political newcomer Greg Chaney. In District 3, incumbent Roxanne Shook is being challenged by Joyce Kidd — who held the position for 12 years before resigning last year due to health reasons. District 5 will see a rematch from four years ago with incumbent Johnny Barnett facing Deborah A. Gibson — who held the seat prior to a close defeat by Barnett.
Deadline to file with the McCreary County Clerk’s Office as a nonpartisan candidates is 4 p.m. today (Tuesday, August 14). A drawing to determine ballot position will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m.
These nonpartisan races are the only local races for McCreary County voters to consider in the upcoming General Election this November. Barring a write-in challenge, U.S. Representative Sarah Beth Gregory, Commonwealth Attorney Allen Trimble and McCreary Circuit Court Clerk Othel King are running unopposed.
On a federal scale, Congressman Hal Rogers (R-5) will face Democrat challenger Kenneth S. Stepp while President Barack Obama faces Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
While the General Election is just under three months away, a special election will be held in two weeks regarding legalized alcohol sales countywide.
Last Tuesday, the McCreary County Board of Elections certified voting machines for the referendum. Early voting began on Friday with Clerk Haynes reporting that 51 voters had cast their ballot at press time on Monday afternoon.
