A veteran firefighter passed away last week.
Larry R. Thompson, 69, of Revelo, died Monday, January 7, at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin.
Thompson served a total of 45 years in the volunteer firefighting community. He was a part of the original McCreary Fire Protection District which formed in 1967, becoming chief in 1972. When Pine Knot formed its own department in 1974, Thompson continued as chief until 1998. He also chaired the South McCreary Fire Department board.
Professionally Thompson was a railroad engineer for 23 years, first for K&T Railroad (bringing coal out of the mines) and later for the Big South Fork Scenic Railroad.
Thompson was born on October 3, 1943, in Whitley City to Estel and Lucille (Strunk) Thompson, who precede him in death. A daughter, Ann Thompson, also precedes.
He is survived by his wife Molly M. (Stephens) Thompson, five children, two sisters, one brother, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and all his brothers with South McCreary Fire and Rescue. He was laid to rest at the Upper Cal Hill Cemetery with full honors by the McCreary County Fire Departments.
