Pine Knot man arrested for armed robbery

Stephens turned himself over to constable

PINE KNOT —  A local man is jailed under a $250,000 cash bond after being arrested last Tuesday night for the armed robbery of a KY 2792 convenience store.

Mickey S. Stephens, 36, of Pine Knot has been charged with first-degree robbery in connection to the February 18 robbery of Before Town Mini Mart.

According to Kentucky State Police, the perpetrator entered the store at approximately 8 p.m. that night armed with a knife and demanding money. He fled the scene on foot after receiving an undisclosed amount.

KSP Trooper Shaler Jones is leading the investigation and was assisted at the scene by Trooper Wendell Higginbotham.

By last Tuesday, authorities had identified Stephens as a suspect and a warrant was obtained for his arrest. Stephens reportedly turned himself in to Constable David Kilby later in the evening. He was booked into the Laurel County Correctional Center just before 1 a.m. on February 20.

McCreary County Deputy Sheriff Joe Horne is listed as the arresting officer.

Assisting were McCreary County Sheriff Gus Skinner, Department of Fish and Wildlife officers and Constable Donald Daugherty.

Stephens’ preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Thursday morning in McCreary District Court.

Still under investigation is the January 5 armed robbery of the Corner Market in Strunk. That investigation — involving the search for a white male armed with a knife — is being handled by the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding that robbery is urged to call the MCSO at 376-2322 or via mccrearysheriff.com.
