Seahawks Complete Signings for 2023 Draft Picks
The Seattle Seahawks have finalized their roster by signing first-round pick Devon Witherspoon, marking the completion of signings for all 10 of their 2023 draft picks. Witherspoon, a promising cornerback from Illinois, had been holding out in contract negotiations, but he finally put pen to paper on Friday.
Head coach Pete Carroll expressed his optimism about the situation, stating that he expected Witherspoon to join the team soon after missing the first two practices of training camp. The No. 5 overall pick is considered a key addition to the Seahawks’ defense and is expected to make an impact in his rookie season.
In addition to securing Witherspoon’s signature, the Seahawks also bolstered their running back depth by signing undrafted rookie free agent Wayne Taulapapa. Taulapapa, who previously played for the University of Washington, impressed the coaching staff during the team’s rookie minicamp.
During his senior year at Washington, Taulapapa rushed for an impressive 887 yards and was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention. His contributions on the field earned him a spot on the Seahawks’ roster as they look to add depth to their backfield.
To create space for Taulapapa on the roster, cornerback Montrae Braswell was waived. The Seahawks made the difficult decision to part ways with Braswell, but they believe that the addition of Taulapapa will ultimately strengthen the team.
Prior to his time at Washington, Taulapapa spent four seasons at the University of Virginia, where he showcased his skills as a reliable running back. He started 27 games and rushed for an impressive 1,192 yards and 19 touchdowns. Taulapapa’s leadership qualities were also evident as he served as a team captain during his senior year at Virginia.
The signings of Witherspoon and Taulapapa demonstrate the Seahawks’ commitment to strengthening their roster for the upcoming season. With a solid mix of talented draft picks and promising undrafted rookies, the team is poised to make a statement in the league. Fans eagerly await the start of the season to see these new additions in action.
