Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash in Central Illinois Claims Five Lives, Triggers Evacuations
Effingham County, Illinois – A horrifying multi-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 40, half a mile east of Teutopolis in central Illinois, has resulted in five fatalities, including a father and his two young children. The crash involved a semi-truck carrying potentially toxic anhydrous ammonia, although the fatalities were not directly caused by the chemical.
The Effingham County coroner’s office has confirmed the tragic loss of life, while five other individuals have been airlifted to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims, but reports suggest that three of the deceased were local residents, while the other two hailed from out of state.
Following the accident, a leak of the highly hazardous anhydrous ammonia prompted emergency response teams to evacuate numerous areas in south-central Illinois. Anhydrous ammonia is a potent chemical that possesses the ability to burn the skin, irritate the eyes, and cause severe harm to the respiratory system if inhaled.
At the time of the crash, the semi-truck was transporting approximately 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia, with around 4,000 gallons being released during the leak. Consequently, authorities swiftly ordered evacuations within a one-mile radius of the crash site, including parts of the town Teutopolis, in order to protect public safety.
The incident has attracted the attention of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), as a 15-person team from the federal agency is expected to arrive at the crash site to conduct a thorough investigation. Their primary focus will be identifying the cause of the accident and examining any potential safety lapses.
As investigations unfold, the affected section of U.S. Highway 40 – between Teutopolis and Montrose – remains closed to the public. Authorities have advised residents to avoid the area entirely until further notice.
This devastating multi-vehicle crash serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers that can arise on our roadways. Additionally, it underlines the peril posed by hazardous substances, like anhydrous ammonia, which require utmost caution during transportation.
As the investigation progresses, McCreary County Record will provide updates on this tragic incident, ensuring our readers are kept well-informed about the latest developments. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends affected by this heart-rending tragedy.
