Virgin Galactic, the space tourism company, recently reported revenues of $2 million for the second quarter of 2023. This significant milestone was achieved through their first commercial mission, Galactic 01, which was a research flight for the Italian Air Force. The success of this mission marked the beginning of commercial operations for Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity vehicle.
The company is now gearing up for their next big adventure, Galactic 02, scheduled for August 10. This will be the first flight to carry private astronaut customers, including Jon Goodwin, Keisha Schahaff, and Anastatia Mayers. CEO Michael Colglazier believes that Galactic 02 will help open up suborbital human spaceflight to a broader audience.
However, despite the company’s success, they predict only $1 million in revenue for each of the next two quarters. This is due to pricing factors and limited seating capacity. Initially, tickets were sold at a range of $200,000 to $250,000, but now each ticket is priced at $450,000. Additionally, only three paying customers will be flown on each flight, with the fourth seat reserved for an astronaut trainer.
Although ticket sales are currently on hold, Virgin Galactic plans to resume selling tickets closer to the introduction of their next-generation spaceplanes, which is scheduled for 2026. They are confident that these new spaceplanes will bring even more excitement and opportunities for space tourism.
Despite the positive revenue results, the company did report a net loss of $134.4 million in the second quarter. However, they managed to raise $241 million through a stock sale, which will help support their ongoing efforts and developments.
In light of their long-term plans, Virgin Galactic has made the decision to defer work on their second suborbital spaceplane, VSS Imagine. Instead, they will prioritize the development of the Delta class of vehicles, which shows their commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation and technology in the space tourism industry.
Overall, Virgin Galactic’s recent revenue report and their upcoming missions demonstrate their progress and dedication to making space tourism accessible to a wider audience. As they continue to refine their operations and expand their offerings, the possibilities for space exploration and adventure are becoming more attainable for individuals from all walks of life.
