Over 175 Prominent Figures Call for an End to Book Bans
In a powerful display of solidarity, over 175 influential individuals from the entertainment industry have joined forces to combat book bans. Spearheaded by the renowned actor and literacy advocate LeVar Burton, an open letter published by MoveOn Political Action encourages creative communities to take a stand against these restrictive practices.
The signatories of the letter argue that book bans are antithetical to the principles of free speech and expression. They highlight the chilling effect that these bans can have on the broader creative field, warning that the censorship will not stop at literature but could extend to other forms of art and entertainment.
Notable figures such as Ariana Grande, Guillermo del Toro, Padma Lakshmi, Roxane Gay, Gabrielle Union, Sandra Cisneros, Amanda Gorman, Margaret Cho, and Ron Perlman have lent their support to the cause. The letter, which can be accessed in its entirety on the Artists Against Book Bans website, serves as a powerful reminder of their refusal to remain silent and their unwavering commitment to upholding artistic freedom.
MoveOn’s executive director, Rahna Epting, took the opportunity to criticize politicians such as Ron DeSantis and MAGA Republicans who seek to censor diverse backgrounds and punish those who think differently. Epting stresses the importance of defending freedom of expression and promoting inclusivity in our society.
Jazz Jennings, a banned author and LGBTQ advocate, emphasized the significance of defending the right to express oneself and the importance of representation and inclusivity in literature. Actress and producer Gabrielle Union called on supporters to take action against book bans, encouraging them to celebrate differences and promote a more inclusive world.
Padma Lakshmi, an acclaimed author and television host, argued that children should not be shielded from history. Lakshmi stressed that decisions regarding school library books should be left in the hands of knowledgeable librarians, not politicians.
Joining the chorus against censorship, award-winning authors Sandra Cisneros and Jodi Picoult voiced their opposition to book bans, further emphasizing the detrimental impact they have on intellectual freedom.
The release of this letter coincides with National Banned Books Month and is accompanied by a public petition and advocacy opportunities offered by MoveOn. As part of their efforts to raise awareness about book bans, MoveOn’s Banned Bookmobile will also distribute free banned books and host events throughout the country.
With these prominent figures lending their voices and their influence, the fight against book bans has gained even greater traction. Their joint commitment to preserving artistic freedom and ensuring access to diverse literature sends a resounding message: book bans will not be tolerated, and the right to intellectual expression must be safeguarded.
