Poland’s three largest opposition parties, the Civic Coalition, have made a bold move to join forces and replace the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party. In a show of unity, the leaders of these parties, including Donald Tusk, have expressed their readiness to cooperate fully in order to form a new majority in parliament.
Currently, the opposition coalition holds 248 out of the 460 seats in the lower house of parliament, with PiS securing 194 seats in the October 15 election. With this strong showing, the opposition is now asking President Andrzej Duda to allow them to form a new government, as they believe they have the necessary votes to govern effectively.
Usually, the largest party is given the first opportunity to form a government, with Duda traditionally following this rule. However, the opposition is looking to fast-track this process and assert their majority in parliament without delay. If Duda allows PiS to try first, it would mean the opposition-led coalition would have to wait until mid-December to take power.
To expedite the process, the opposition leaders are urging Duda to act swiftly and follow the constitutional steps to convene the new parliament and nominate a prime minister. Duda’s first meeting will be with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on behalf of the Law and Justice party, followed by a meeting with Tusk.
Additionally, the opposition leaders have called on Duda to convene the inaugural session of the new parliament as soon as possible. This move is seen as a test of the opposition’s majority in a vote once the new parliament is in session. According to a representative from the president’s office, the president alone has the power to designate the prime minister based on the constitution.
The formation of this opposition coalition marks a significant shift in Polish politics, with hopes of a different direction and a new governing power. Only time will tell how successful the opposition’s efforts will be, but their determination is clear. The McCreary County Record will stay tuned to provide updates on this evolving situation.
