Title: Jason Aldean’s Controversial Hit Song Reaches Number One, Igniting Debate
In a surprising turn of events, Jason Aldean’s single “Try That in a Small Town” has soared to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, despite stirring up controversy along the way. The song, which initially received little attention, gained traction after the release of its music video in July.
However, the video soon faced criticism leading Country Music Television (CMT) to pull it off the air. The video was accused of promoting white nationalism and portraying protests about racial issues as lawless and violent. Adding to the controversy, parts of the video were filmed at Columbia, Tennessee’s courthouse, the site of a lynching in 1927.
Undeterred, Aldean and his team decided to re-upload the video on YouTube, this time removing footage of the Black Lives Matter protests, which further fueled the debate. In response, conservative fans rallied behind Aldean, streaming and purchasing the song in droves, resulting in increased sales.
The song, which debuted at Number 2 last week, held its position at the top of iTunes’ songs chart. It saw an impressive 30.7 million streams last week, although sales took a 23% dip, reaching 175,000.
Despite facing backlash from fellow artists such as Sheryl Crow, Aldean remains steadfast in his dismissive attitude towards the controversy. During a recent concert, he addressed cancel culture, acknowledging the criticism while expressing gratitude towards his supportive fans.
However, the controversies did not end there. At another concert, Aldean made a comparison between the backlash he faced and the tragic Boston Marathon bombing, further igniting public outrage.
Nonetheless, this week’s Billboard chart serves as a milestone for country music. For the first time in recent memory, the top three spots are occupied by country songs. Alongside Aldean’s chart-topping single, Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” secured Number 2, and Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” claimed the third spot.
Country music has experienced a remarkable resurgence in 2023, thanks to successful releases from artists like Wallen and even pop star Taylor Swift, who has embraced the genre in recent years. With country music reclaiming the charts, it’s evident that the genre’s appeal shows no signs of waning anytime soon.
As Jason Aldean’s controversial hit continues to dominate the charts, the debate surrounding the song and its music video is far from over. Only time will tell if the success of “Try That in a Small Town” will be overshadowed by the controversies it has sparked.
