Apple is making a major update to its app distribution process in Europe, allowing developers to distribute iPhone and iPad applications directly from their websites. This new Web Distribution option will be available to developers with apps that were installed by over 1 million users the previous year. However, new developers or those with less than a million downloads in the EU will not be eligible for this option.
The Web Distribution feature will be introduced later this spring after a software update, giving developers access to APIs to facilitate app distribution, integrate with system functionality, and more. Apps distributed from a website must meet Notarization requirements and be installed from a domain registered in App Store Connect. Users will also need to approve developers in iOS settings before downloading apps from their websites.
In addition to the Web Distribution option, Apple has introduced alternative app marketplaces for EU developers to offer iOS apps. Developers can choose to offer a catalog of apps only from their marketplace or use the Web Distribution method. However, Apple will charge a Core Technology Fee (CTF) for app installs delivered from app stores, alternative marketplaces, or from developer websites. EU-based developers will pay reduced commissions for apps distributed on Apple’s App Store.
These changes come as Apple seeks to comply with new European rules, including the Digital Markets Act (DMA), with European regulators examining if Apple and other gatekeepers have complied with the new regulations. Nonprofits, accredited schools, and government entities can apply for fee waivers for the Core Technology Fee. Overall, these updates aim to provide more options and flexibility for developers while ensuring compliance with the latest regulations in Europe.
