RAGBRAI Riders Enjoy Exclusive Ride-through at Kinnick Stadium
IOWA CITY, IA – The annual Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) made a historic stop at Kinnick Stadium, the home of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. The riders, making their way through Iowa’s scenic landscapes, took a break to soak in the atmosphere of the iconic college football arena.
For the first time ever, Kinnick Stadium opened its doors to RAGBRAI participants, allowing them a unique opportunity to ride through the hallowed grounds of Hawkeye football history. Hawkeye fans, experiencing a mix of emotions, couldn’t help but reminisce about their favorite games and memorable moments at the stadium.
Entering the stadium from the north, the riders traveled past the Nile Kinnick statue, paying homage to the legendary 1939 Heisman Trophy winner. They also glided by a stunning bronze mural, showcasing the esteemed athlete in all his glory. The excitement among both the riders and fans was palpable as they made their way towards the north concourse, overlooking the field.
Hawkeye supporters, known for their unwavering passion, couldn’t contain their enthusiasm. Cheers and chants of “Go Hawks!” and “I-O-W-A!” echoed through the stadium as the RAGBRAI riders passed through. The riders, giddy with the support, appreciated the warm welcome they received from the university’s loyal fan base.
This tradition of riding through college football stadiums was initiated last year when RAGBRAI riders made their way through Iowa State University’s (ISU) Jack Trice Stadium. With both Ames and Iowa City on the route last year, the competition between the two schools was fierce. However, this year, Hawkeye fans were relieved to have their chance to showcase their stadium and not be upstaged by their ISU rivals.
Now firmly established as a RAGBRAI tradition, riders can look forward to cycling through both Kinnick Stadium and Jack Trice Stadium as a part of their journey across the state. The two fan bases take immense pride in offering this unique privilege to their dedicated supporters.
