The Green Bay Packers are heading into the 2023 season with a much stronger outside linebacker group than they had at the end of the 2022 season, according to reports. Last season, the team faced challenges due to the absence of Rashan Gary, forcing them to piece together their edge rusher group. However, despite the obstacles, players like Kingsley Enagbare and Justin Hollins made significant contributions.

During training camp, the Packers have seen a notable improvement in the depth at outside linebacker. Gary has returned from his ACL rehabilitation and has been actively participating in 11-on-11 snaps. This is a positive sign for the team as they depend heavily on Gary’s skills and leadership.

Enagbare has also been making waves with his standout performance during a preseason game, where he recorded two sacks. His progress in his second year and impressive showings during joint practices have caught the attention of Head Coach Matt LaFleur, who is pleased with the group’s potential and increased competition.

The addition of undrafted rookie Brenton Cox Jr. has been a pleasant surprise for the Packers. Cox has shown promise throughout training camp and may earn a surprise roster spot. Despite some off-the-field issues, Cox has found a fresh start with the Packers and has been making the most of the opportunity.

Another player who is still adjusting but has shown promise is Lukas Van Ness, the team’s first-round draft pick. Van Ness has been practicing with the defensive linemen at times and may be utilized as an interior rusher. The team acknowledges the need for patience with his development.

The improved depth chart at outside linebacker is a positive sign for the Packers’ defense. With the additional talent and competition within the group, Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry has more options to work with and is hopeful that the improvements will translate onto the field.

While practices and preseason games are valuable for player evaluation and preparation, the ultimate focus for the Packers is on performing when it matters most in 2.5 weeks – the start of the regular season. The team remains optimistic that Gary will be ready for Week 1, although he may start on a part-time basis.

The McCreary County Record will continue to monitor the progress of the Packers’ outside linebacker group as the season approaches, with the hope that their improved depth will make a significant impact on the team’s success.
