Taipei, Taiwan – Typhoon Haikui slammed into southeastern Taiwan today, causing domestic flight disruptions and prompting the evacuation of almost 4,000 individuals. The typhoon made landfall in the remote, mountainous region of the country, leading counties and cities in the area to declare a day off for workers and cancel classes.
As precautionary measures, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has cautioned citizens to avoid going outdoors and engaging in outdoor activities to prevent potential harm. Although Haikui has caused minimal damage thus far, two individuals were slightly injured when a tree fell on a truck in the eastern county of Hualien.
While Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, experienced sporadic rain showers, the overall impact was relatively minimal. In comparison to the recent Typhoon Saola, which significantly impacted Hong Kong and Guangdong province in China, Haikui was weaker in intensity.
Heightened measures have been taken by Taiwan’s authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of its people. Approximately 3,729 individuals, primarily in the south and east, have been evacuated from vulnerable areas. In addition to the evacuations, domestic flights and ferry services to nearby islands were cancelled, while international flights faced minimal disruptions.
To address potential emergencies, Taiwan’s military has also mobilized soldiers and equipment to aid in flood relief and aid evacuation efforts. The collaborative efforts between government agencies and the military are expected to enhance the response of Taiwan’s authorities to the typhoon’s impact.
According to meteorological forecasts, Haikui is projected to enter the Taiwan Strait and continue towards China, further raising concerns in the region. Taiwanese authorities, in coordination with their Chinese counterparts, are closely monitoring the typhoon’s path to minimize potential damage and ensure the safety of local communities.
As Taiwan grapples with the impact of Typhoon Haikui, the nation remains vigilant in its preparation and response to preserve the well-being of its citizens.
